Winter weather returns Monday night

ROCKFORD — Don’t put the shovels away yet: A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for nearly all areas in Illinois north of I-88, as 1-3 inches of snow is expected Monday night.

Temperatures will continue their slow decline into the mid-20s Monday afternoon, and gusts from the southeast will see wind chills in the teens overnight.

Freezing rain is expected to turn into snow around 3 p.m. Monday and continue through most of the night. Rockford should see around 1-2 inches with areas to the north and west seeing anywhere from 3-5 inches before drivetime Tuesday.

There’s a chance for more snow Tuesday afternoon, although the largest amounts are again expected to remain north of the city.
