Crews battle large downtown fire

DOWNTOWN — Nobody was injured Friday night as Rockford firefighters battled a three-alarm fire at QMI, 215 N. Fourth St.

Officials have not announced a cause of the blaze, although power outages were reported across downtown before the flames were brought under control at around midnight. At least two transformers blew near the scene.

According to Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten, no one was inside QMI; the occupants of a nearby apartment building were evacuated safely.

QMI sells mats and various janitorial supplies.

The Rock River Times will have more on this story as it develops. R.
