ROCKFORD — When Jojo G. needed a job, she took a chance to call the Rockford City Market to pitch a booth. She bluffed her way into a path that has now become her career.

When she pitched the market initially, it was as a baker of cakes and other sweets. But organizers said they were already full up for that kind of fare, and so they asked if she knew how to do breads. She said yes, but that wasn’t quite the truth.

“I did not know how to bake bread,” she says. “I’d never baked bread before. I had to figure it out because I really wanted to be at the Market.”
