Police: Firework responsible for car explosion

ROCKFORD — What was initially reported as a possible bomb turned out to be a firework that caused an explosion underneath a car on Rockford’s south side Thursday.

At around 9:40 a.m., officers from the Rockford Police Department responded to 1500 Birch Court in reference to a complaint of an explosion. Upon arrival, officers determined a black Pontiac G6 parked near the intersection of Buckbee Street and Birch Court was involved in the incident.

Because the complaint involved an explosion, the Rockford Police Bomb Unit responded to the scene. The vehicle’s rear bumper was damaged and lying on the ground. After the bomb unit’s examination, officers determined a firework had been placed under the car.

No injuries were reported.

Police are seeking a suspect in the incident. Assistant Deputy Police Chief Mike Dalke said he’s a white male, 20 to 30 years old, and was driving a white older model Oldsmobile.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Rockford Police Department at 815- 966-2900 or Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867. R.
