Toronto Marlies win Calder Cup in seven games

Staff Report

TORONTO, Ont. – The Toronto Marlies were crowned Calder Cup champions Thursday by skating past the Texas Stars 6-1 in Game 7 of the best-of-seven championship series.

Andreas Johnsson and Mason Marchment each scored twice, while Carl Grundstrom and Ben Smith also found the back of the net to power the Marlies to their Calder Cup since moving to Toronto at the beginning of the 2005-06 season.

Garret Sparks made 29 saves and was named the game’s first star in the victory.

Johnsson opened the scoring in the first period, as he drove hard to the net and knocked in a pass from Miro Aaltonen.

Marchment extended the lead later in the opening frame, as he fired a one-timer from the slot after passes from Trevor Moore and Chris Mueller.

Neither team found the scoresheet in the second but Grundstrom was able to connect on a one-timer after a saucer pass from Johnsson just three and a half minutes into the final frame.

Austin Fyten brought the Stars back within two midway through the period, but Johnsson reinstated the three-goal lead with under four to play as he broke in and beat Mike McKenna. LoVerde had an assist on goal.

Smith added an empty net goal (LoVerde assist) before Marchment added a final dagger with 56 seconds left. Adam Brooks and Andrew Nielsen had the assists there. R.
