ROCKFORD – A Rockford man was jailed and charged with the attempted armed robbery of an elderly woman at an east-side grocery store Sunday night.

Randy Weir, 57, was charged with attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery to a senior citizen after an incident police say occurred at the Schnucks supermarket at 2601 North Mulford Road.

Police say officers were dispatched to the scene at 8 p.m., and spoke to a 65-year-old woman who said she was sitting in her car in the parking lot when she was approached by a white male armed with a knife who attempted to rob her. When the victim tried to accelerate and drive away, she said the man attempted to stab her. He then fled on foot.

Responding officers searched for the suspect and located a man, later identified as Weir, in the 2700 block of North Mulford Road and took him into custody. He’s currently lodged in the Winnebago County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

The woman received a minor injury but refused medical attention. Weir is due in court July 17. R.
