Authorities catch last 2 of 3 men who escaped Illinois jail

By The Associated Press

CARMI, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in southeastern Illinois say they’ve captured the last two of three men who allegedly broke out of a county jail in mid-June.

The Hardin County sheriff’s office took 61-year-old Johnny Tipton into custody Saturday night. Tipton was found a day after authorities captured 24-year-old Zachery Shock in Gallatin County. Police say Shock surrendered without resistance and had a loaded gun in his possession.

Shock faces murder charges for the 2016 shooting of James Berkel of McLeansboro. Tipton was jailed on possession of stolen property charges.

The White County sheriff’s office says Tipton, Shock and 28-year-old Justin Bray used a pipe to break through an outside wall of the jail in Carmi near the Indiana border. Bray, who was jailed for unlawful use of a weapon, was captured shortly afterward.
