Arrest made in violent robberies

Staff Report

ROCKFORD – A Rockford man faces charges in two violent robberies in Rockford, police reported Thursday.

Joseph Collins, 20, faces two counts of aggravated battery and a single count of robbery in two separate incidents. Police say the first happened Aug. 28 at Jasmine Pantry, 2614 Kilburn Ave. Police say a clerk was beaten by what was initially reported as a 17-year-old male.

Upon further investigation by detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit, it was determined the 17-year-old was not involved. Collins was later named a suspect.

Police also allege that Collins is responsible for beating and robbing a pizza delivery driver in the 500 block of North Day Avenue Aug. 19. He was arrested Wednesday, Sept. 19, on an unrelated warrant. Initial bond is set at $140,000. Collins is due in court this afternoon. R.
