Mayor’s Hunger Luncheon returns Oct. 16

Staff Report

ROCKFORD – More than 10 years after it was last held, the Mayor’s Hunger Luncheon will return Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cliffbreakers Riverside Conference Center.

Mayor Tom McNamara will deliver the keynote address, touching on food security and what agencies are doing to address some of the region’s hunger-related issues. The luncheon was launched three decades ago by Rockford Mayor John McNamara and continued as a fundraiser for Hunger Connection into the late 1990s.

The local chapter of Bread for the World worked to revive the event. This year’s lunch will also honor the work of the late Ruth Fairchild who was a strong supporter of Roots & Wings, a youth leadership and urban agriculture program led by Angelic Organics Learning Center.

The event aims to raise awareness of hunger issues in the region and highlight organizations working to help alleviate the problem.

Soup, salad and bread will be served. Tickets are $30 per person and net proceeds will benefit Roots & Wings, Zion Outreach, Rockford Housing Authority and the residents of Blackhawk Courts.

Roots & Wings engages youth and adults in farm-to- table activities to provide healthy food options in our community.
