ROCKFORD – A decomposed body was pulled from the Rock River near South Main Street and Beltline Road Monday afternoon.

Officials say fishermen discovered the remains tangled in tree branches at around noon.

A crew from the New Milford Fire Department attempted to retrieve the body but their boat was swept into an island and overturned. Four passengers were rescued by the Rockford Fire Department. Nobody was injured.

A Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said because the body is badly decomposed, whether it is male or female is not known. Identification is pending examination by the coroner.

The Rock River Times will have more on this story as it develops. R.
