ROCKFORD – A Winnebago County man has been charged with owning animals for sport fighting after a search warrant was served at a residence just west of Rockford last week.

Salvador Jimenez Gutierrez, 50, is charged with possession of animals used for sport fighting after 150 roosters were confiscated in the 2900 block of Cunningham Road.

Winnebago County deputies discovered the birds while they were assisting federal authorities with a drug investigation.

As of this report, the roosters were being housed by Winnebago County Animal Services. A spokesman said where they end up from there is being arranged.

Keeping fowl for sport fighting is a Class 4 felony, punishable by one to three years in prison and fines of up to $25,000. Gutierrez’s first court appearance is pending. He is not in custody. R.
