Teen year’s first homicide victim

ROCKFORD — The victim in the first homicide of the year has been identified as a 15-year-old boy.

Authorities say patrol officers were called to to the 700 block of Kent Street shortly before 4 p.m., in response to a shots-fired call. Upon arrival, officers located the victim lying in the street. He’d been shot in the head.

Police say they believed the victim was walking with a group of friends when they were confronted by an unknown number of suspects in a car. Shots were fired from the vehicle at the group, and the victim was struck and killed.

The identity of the victim is not being released pending family notification. Detectives from the
Rockford Police Department are conducting a follow-up investigation.
