Area warming centers open during bitter cold temperatures

ROCKFORD — As temperatures are expected to dip to nearly -30 below Wednesday, Jan. 30, area warming centers will be open for those without proper shelter.

Following is a list of warm places to go during freezing weather. November of last year, running through April of this year. The centers have been open from last November and will close in April.

These facilities provide safe and warm locations during extreme cold temperatures for area residents with inadequate heat or those who turn their thermostat down to save energy costs, although lowering do not lowering thermostats to below 60 degrees is not recommended.

Residents are also encouraged to ensure their senior and other vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbors are safe during times of extreme cold. Churches and other organized groups are also encouraged to check-in on the well-being of their members.

In the event of a severe weather crisis, more sites may be opened as needed. A comprehensive list may obtained by calling the 2-1-1 resource line or texting the keyword COLD to 51555.

Officials say to call Community Action Agency at 844-710-6919 for assistance:

  • If you are without heat because your utilities are shut off
  • If you are a homeowner with a non-working furnace
  • If you are homeowner interested in weatherization improvements to make
    your home more energy and cost efficient
  • If you are living on the streets and need shelter.
