ROCKFORD – A Rockford man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly ramming a vehicle into two local businesses.

Richard Overcash, 56, is charged with attempted burglary and criminal damage of property in two incidents police say occurred Wednesday morning. The first happened at around 5 a.m., when officers were called to J & F Tobacco, 2410 S. Alpine Road, in response to a business alarm. There, they observed damage to the front door and later learned a red pickup truck ran into the building twice without gaining entrance.

Three hours later, patrol officers responded to 221 Sandy Hollow Road for a possible burglary at Tobacco One Plus. Police say a red pickup caused damage to the front door and adjacent wall.

A truck matching the description of the suspect vehicle was later stopped near the 900 block of 11th St., and Overcash was taken into custody.

Nothing was taken and no one was hurt in either incident.

Overcash is lodged in the Winnebago County Jail. Bond is set at $185,750. He’s due in court Thursday morning.
