Teen dies in Rockford BMX competition

ROCKFORD – A teenage boy died Sunday from injuries suffered while competing in the Midwest Nationals Searls Park.

According to USA BMX, Carson Stoffel, of Huntington, Indiana, died at a local hospital Sunday afternoon. 

“We are deeply saddened by Carson’s passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his father, Jake Stoffel, his mother, Krista Rohrabaugh, his brother, Chandler, and his sister, Bryleigh,” the organization said in a statement. “To Carson’s family, we would like to extend our sincere condolences and assure the Stoffel family that USA BMX will do everything to assist and support them through this difficult time.”

Jake Stoffel said his son “absolutely loved riding his bike and being with his friends.” 

USA BMX has a more than four-decade year association with Rockford, including working with Rockford BMX on the Midwest Nationals for the last 33 years.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the local and national BMX community and with the Stoffel family,” Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau CEO John Groh said.
