Two killed in crash following police chase

UPDATE: The two victims of Thursday’s fatal crash have been identified as 36-year-old Tareo Henry and Todd Bamberger, 50, both of Rockford.

ROCKFORD – A police chase ended in a deadly crash Thursday night on the city’s far-west side.

According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded at around 10:30 p.m., when deputies noticed a dark-colored SUV driving recklessly near Auburn Street and North Central Avenue. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver did not comply. 

The sheriff’s office said when deputies caught up to the SUV, the driver tried hit to the patrol vehicle and fled. The vehicle then collided with an coming car at the intersection of Auburn and North Springfield Avenue.

Bamberger and Henry died at a local hospital. Whether they were in the same vehicle is still not known. Two other people were treated for injuries sustained in the crash. They are expected to recover.

The crash is being invested by the Illinois State Police Integrity Task Force and the Rockford Police Department.
