ROCKFORD – A strong defensive showing kept Freeport in the game, but turnovers ultimately did the Pretzels in as they fell to Auburn 14-2 at John W. Wyeth Stadium Friday.
It was a tug-of-war in the first half; the only points on the board came from a safety after a strong Pretzel defense pinned Auburn in its own end zone. Freeport also intercepted the Knights three times but couldn’t muster an offensive scoring drive.
Holding onto the ball was also a problem for Freeport all night. The Pretzels moved the chains but committed a total of eight turnovers, three inside the Auburn 20 yard-line.
Auburn’s Maurice Huntley scored two touchdowns in the second half. The senior finished with 91 yards on the ground.
Auburn, Hononegah and Boylan are each 2-0 in the NIC-10 Conference going into Week 3. The Indians topped Guilford 47-30 Friday while Boylan edged Belvidere North 13-7.
Auburn and Freeport both play at home next week. The Knights host East. Freeport faces Hononegah.
