ROCKFORD – A Rockford man was jailed Wednesday for allegedly pointing a BB gun at an off-duty police officer.

Shortly before 1 p.m., the uniformed patrol officer was walking near West State Street and South Court Street following a court appearance. As he was walking, police say the officer observed the driver of a gray vehicle point a gun at him. The vehicle then continued south on Church Street.

A Rockford squad car conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 8300 block of Spring Brook Road short time later and recovered a BB gun and a box of ammunition. The driver, identified as 20-year-old Dawson Ranz, was taken into custody. 

Ranz is charged with aggravated assault to a police officer, unlawful possession of ammunition and no FOID.
