Gunman takes hostages inside Rockford bank

ROCKFORD – The Rockford Police are on the scene of hostage situation inside an east-side bank. 

According to police, the incident unfolded Friday, at Heritage Credit Union at the corner of East State Street and Mulford Road.

Police Chief Dan O’Shea told media that at about 2:30 p.m., a gunman entered the bank and ordered everyone out of the building. He then barricaded himself inside the building along with those who were left inside.

As of this report, SWAT and a hostage negotiation team are at the scene.

“Right now, we have an armed subject inside the business with several other either patrons or businesspeople,” the chief said. “We are trying to make communications with him.”

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
