Rockford Police Department seizes illegal guns

Staff Report

ROCKFORD – The Rockford Police Department has seized several illegal guns over the past two weeks, Chief Dan O’Shea reported Tuesday.

“Over the last couple weeks we’ve seen an increase in criminals shooting at one
another,” O’Shea said. “The officers and investigators have been working
diligently to apprehend the offenders and seize the illegally possessed weapons. We are striving to keep violent crime down and we need the continued support of our
community to do so. While we are pleased with the amount of weapons we have taken off the street in the last two weeks, it is also an alarmingly high amount.”

In Illinois, open carry of a handgun on your person or in a vehicle is illegal, O’Shea added. Illinois law requires residents to have a Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) to possess a firearm or ammunition. An Illinois Concealed Carry License (CCL) is required to concealed carry a firearm in Illinois. You can also not receive a FOID card if you have any felony convictions or any kind of domestic violence conviction.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing violence of any kind, please report the
information to the Rockford Police Department at 815-966-2900, on Facebook
(@RockfordIllinoisPoliceDepartment) or on Twitter (@RockfordPD).

Anonymous tips can be left  with Rockford Area Crime Stoppers by calling 815-963-7867.
