(TRRT) – Although “Making a Murderer” subject Steven Avery has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, he has only experienced mild symptoms of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the infection.

According to Jerome Buting, one of Avery’s former defense attorneys, Avery is confined to his cell and is recovering.

“Steven Avery has tested positive for COVID-19, and is confined to his cell,” Buting tweeted Wednesday. But @SandyGreenman reports he only had short-lived symptoms & is in good spirits.”

Avery currently lawyer, noted Chicago post-conviction attorney Kathleen Zellner, confirmed that he is coronavirus positive.

“It is true that Steven Avery has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus —he will fully recover,” Zellner tweeted. “The bigger threat to him is whether the COA will cure the disease that caused him to be wrongfully convicted.”

Avery is serving life without parole for the 2005 death of Teresa Halbach. Halbach’s charred remains were found on Avery’s property. Avery claims he was framed for the crime. His nephew, then 16-year-old Brendan Dassey, is also serving a life sentence. Dassey has exhausted all of his appeals and, barring any new evidence, will be eligible for parole in 2048.  Avery’s current appeal is pending.
