Jefferson High School students earn top honors at regional Poetry Out Loud competition

ROCKFORD — Two Jefferson High School students took top honors in the regional Poetry Out Loud competition in Chicago.

Olivia Vereb took first place while Kelcey Dodd took second place. They will now advance to the state competition March 7 at the Hoagland Center for the Arts in Springfield.

The state champion advances to the Poetry Out Loud national semifinals May 1. The finals are June 5.

Winners of the national competition will take home $50,000 in awards and school stipends.

Poetry Out Loud is presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation in partnership with the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

The program encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.
