Five RPS 205 girls tennis players head to state

IHSA tourney opens Thursday

Staff Report

ROCKFORD- Four Rockford School District sophomores and one junior are looking to make deep runs in the IHSA tennis tournament, which opens Thursday.

The IHSA posted the Class 2A brackets Tuesday night.

Auburn’s Belen Nevenhoven, the two-time NIC-10 No. 1 singles champion, will play Elgin’s Marta Krakowski at Schaumburg High School. The sophomore is the NIC-10’s best hope for ending a curious streak. No girls tennis player in NIC-10 history has won an IHSA state championship. Nevenhoven lost just one game in four sets in last week’s Harlem Sectional.

Auburn teammate, sophomore Paris Thompson, who won the NIC-10 No. 2 singles crown, takes on Annabelle Siegel of Minooka at Hersey High School.

Guilford sophomore Kasey Aucutt, who qualified by taking fourth at last week’s Harlem Sectional, will play Madeline Gentry of Normal Community West at Schaumburg.

Auburn’s top doubles team of junior Melanie Martinovic and sophomore Phuong Pham finished third in the sectional. They take on Samantha Frishman and Grace Chatas of Glenbrook North. R.
