Illinois fourth-graders below national average in reading

Staff Report Fourth-graders in Illinois on average scored 218 on a standardized reading test administered last year, which is one point below the 2019 national average calculated by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The Illinois students’ average score ranked in a tie for 32nd among the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
