ROCKFORD — The death of a 24-year-old woman initially reported as “suspicious” is being investigated as a homicide, police said Friday night.

Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department spokesmen say the victim was found after 3:30 p.m., Friday, in a bedroom of a house at 609 Atwood Avenue. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A cause of death or the victim’s identity has not been announced.

It is not known if a weapon was involved or if investigators have named a suspect. Police say there was blood at the scene.

“We’re interviewing family, roommates and friends to find out exactly what the living situation was — relationships that the young lady had,” Winnebago County Deputy Chief Mike Schultz told the Rockford Register Star. “So, it’s still in the preliminary stages of the investigation to find out who this young lady was and who she was associated with.”

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office at 815-282-2600. R.

The Rock River Times will have more on this story as it develops.
