City announces winter warming centers
Staff Report
ROCKFORD – The City of Rockford Human Services Department, a Community Action Agency, announces the availability of warming centers in Winnebago and Boone counties during the 2018-2019 winter season.
These facilities provide safe and warm locations during extreme cold temperatures for area residents with inadequate heat or those who turn their thermostat down to save energy costs.
It is not recommended, however, to set thermostats below 60 degrees.
Residents are encouraged to ensure their senior and other vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbors are safe during times of extreme cold. Churches and other organized groups are also encouraged to check-in on the well-being of their members.
In the event of a severe weather crisis, more sites may be opened as needed. Citizens can call the 2-1-1 resource line or text the keyword COLD to 51555 to obtain a comprehensive and updated list.
The Community Action Agency is available at 844-710-6919 for inquiries regarding assistance for the homeless, those without utilities, or homeowners interested in weatherization improvements to make their homes more energy and cost efficient. R.
