ROCKFORD — The owner of the blighted Essex Wire property on the northwest side has made a $109,000 payment to the City of Rockford.

The payment is a court-ordered installment, part of a Dec. 12, 2018 sanction against Paul Bennett, the president of A-W-Bennett Enterprises, Inc., for $216,000 – the estimated cost to complete the demolition of the Essex facility.

The first installment was due within 14 days of entry of the order. Bennett was ordered to personally appear in court if the first installment had not been made.

Officials confirmed that the first installment of $109,000 is being held in escrow until further order of the court and that the Jan. 3 status hearing in front of Judge Lisa Fabiano has been canceled.

The next court date is schedule for Jan. 17, the day Bennett is ordered to pay the remaining balance or personally appear. R.
