ROCKFORD – Although the driver of a vehicle involved in the death of a pedestrian in Rockford Tuesday left the scene of the crash, the incident is not a hit-and-run, police said Thursday.

At around 8:30 p.m., Oct. 15, Rockford officers responded to an accident involving vehicle and pedestrian in the 2600 block of Auburn Street. Police say a woman was walking north across Auburn Street when a red westbound SUV struck her.

The victim, a 53-year-old Rockford woman, was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Her identity is not being released at this time.

“The red SUV initially left the scene, but the 21-year-old female driver contacted police a short time later and is fully cooperative,” Rockford Police Public Information Officer Christie Castillo said in a release.

The accident remains under investigation by the Rockford Police Department’s Traffic Unit.
