Suspect wounded in officer-involved shooting

ROCKFORD – A a man wanted on a narcotics warrant was shot by Winnebago County deputies on the city’s northwest side Wednesday morning.

Officials say the shooting happened at around 11 a.m., at the Fas Fuel station on the corner of North Main Street and Halsted Road.

Officers from several police agencies responded to the scene. As of this report, the suspect’s identity has not been announced. The suspect suffered what are being reported as serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. His condition is currently unknown.

A law enforcement spokesman told TRRT deputies attempted to detain the suspect after the vehicle he was riding in pulled into the Fas Mart station. Instead of complying, the suspect, who was wanted on a narcotics warrant, produced a gun and fired a shot at the officers. Five deputies returned fire. The driver of the suspect vehicle was not charged.

The area was closed off for several hours.The Winnebago Boone Integrity Task Force is investigating.
